Souvenirs, souvenirs...
On utilisait un système similaire dans l'usine Sopelem du bvd Davout à Paris pour la construction des périscopes des sous marins.
C'était la référence pour aligner tous les éléments optiques dans le tube jusqu'à la tête de périscope, qu'il soit d'attaque, de veille ou de navigation.

La quantité de mercure était assez importante et c'était directement sa surface qui servait de miroir de référence avec une horizontalité absolue.
Évidement celle ci s'oxydait assez vite et il fallait régulièrement la nettoyer, ce qui se faisait en passant dessus du papier carbone utilisé couramment dans les bureaux des années 70 ...

A similar system was used in the Sopelem factory on bvd Davout in Paris for the construction of submarine periscopes.
It was the benchmark for aligning all the optical elements in the tube to the periscope head, whether it was attack, standby or navigation.

The quantity of mercury was quite significant and it was directly its surface which served as a reference mirror with absolute horizontality.
Obviously this one oxidized quickly enough and it had to be cleaned regularly, which was done by passing over carbon paper commonly used in offices of the 70s ...
